Teaching Reading at Our School
The importance of reading is recognised by the school. Reading is taught using a range reading schemes combined with a selection of narrative and non- narrative colour banded books aimed to suit and interest the individual requirements of every child. All children have reading records which accompany their reading book to go home. Parents/Carers are encouraged to read with children and write their comments in the book.
Teaching Phonics at our school
Phonics is taught in the EYFS and years 1 & 2. It is delivered using exciting and purposeful materials based on “letters and Sounds”.
“Letters and Sounds” is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.
For more information on our phonics and reading or to explore how you can support your child’s learning at home please feel free to come and talk to their teacher.
